This isicholo is based on a married
woman's hairstyle from past generations.
Most Zulu women wear these hats only
for special or ceremonial occasions. A
basketry foundation is overlaid with string
or grass fiber dyed with a mixture of red
ochre and fat. The hats are symbolic of a
woman's maturity & her marital status.
This pieces is an old traditional pieces that shows signs of its authenticity. It is from the Misinga District on Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa.
