This zither is made of wood and a large gourd, from the Kwere people of Tanzania. The zither is a traditional East African
stringed instrument which accompanied
song and dance.
The strings would have been stretched over the body of the
trough and attached through holes at
both ends. The gourd or calabash would
act as a resonating chamber for the sound.
