Trumpets and horns are used in African culture as long distance signalers. They resemble the didgeridoo of the Australian
Aborigines. In many cultutres across Africa the trumpets are large
cylinders with a head carved on the closed end and the open end
flares for the sound emission. These trumpets are employed in a
fashion more similar to a loud speaker, where the user would shout
into the small hole on the side of the upper portion. The messages
were intended to alert the neighboring villages to gather for an important matter such as the death of a chief or the appointment of
his successor, as well as warnings of danger, war or anything that
would concern the entirety of the tribesmen.
It was used for ceremonial, not so much for musical performance purposes, to call the spirits into presence, invoking their influence for the benefit of the community.
