A very unusual and rare Tiv peoples carved wooden post figure with metal receptacle on top, most likely to hold a bowl of offerings.
The Post has an ancestor face carved on it accented with black and white paints and ritual facial scars that suggest a Tiv peoples attribution.
The polygynous Tiv live on both sides of the Benue River in Nigeria.
We reinforced the display stand.
Provenance: Ex Dr Noble & Jean Endicott collection, New York, also a private New Jersey collection.
Height: 26 ½" including the 6" square wooden base which is 1 ¾" tall.
The Post measures 25 inches tall.
