Hand-carved lidded wooden spice box with an animal on the lid. From the Tharu people of southern Nepal. Mid-20th century.
It has a rich patina and some age cracks from years of use. It was used to hold spices in a household kitchen in a rural Tharu home. The cover rotates on a vertical handle, and swings open up to reveal the spices that would have been stored within.
