The Shona stone sculpture of Zimbabwe is
prized in art museums & galleries worldwide. Among these
works of art are the Ukama, or "Loving Family" sculptures
which depict mothers and their children, whole families, and
couples embraced in love & dancing with joy. Relationships
are an important part of Shona culture and these sculptures
signify the bonds between peoplein a family. The bodies and
arms are joined to symbolize the strength & longevity of these
relationships. Just as a mother will take care of her young, it is
also the responsibilty of the children to care for their parents
& grandparents in the later years of their lives.
