The men of the nomadic Tuareg wear a variety of talisman necklaces believed to have magical powers. Grisgris (pronounced gree-gree) typically consist of leather pouches adorned with beads and other small objects. Sewn within the pouches are passages from the Koran, as most Tuareg practice Islam. Among the powers attributed to the grisgris are protection from enemies, resistance to evil, imperviousness to injury, invisibility, beauty, irresistibility to women, and enhanced dance performance.
