7 talismans and a key!
These rare leather protective amulets made of leather and vellum inside were worn by men. Each amulet contains text written on the vellum for its wearer in Ge'ez, a semetic language that is no longer spoken. They are written on vellum in black ink with titles and holy names often in red ink. Sometimes, they also contain beautiful illustrations. Their use dates back to as early as the fourteenth century and continued through to the nineteenth century.
This was collected by Paul Koprowski in the early 1960's in East Africa, when he was stationed there in the Peace Corps.
