Small Zakpei Ge (Fire Prevention Mask) Mask - Dan People, Liberia/Ivory Coast

Traditionally, the Zakpei Ge is the fire prevention mask. In the Savanna area where the Northern Dan live, the danger of fire is especially great. The fastest runner of the village is selected to report fires to the people working in the fields and surrounding areas. He also ensures that the women extinguish their cooking gifts, before the afternoon winds begin to blow.

Zakpei is aggressive and carries a branch as a weapon, sometimes throws things and is meant to inspire fear. The spirit he represents can punish careless women by upturning their pots and can confiscate utensils as ransom.

It is too big to be a passport mask, and yet is too small for a facial mask. The wooden mask is covered in a red fabric.
