From rural Nepal. Called khurpeto in Nepali - literally Khurpa holder, khurpa being the Nepali word for sickle - they are carved by hand by their owners, using the simplest of tools. The holders are worn around the waist by means of a thin rope of hand twisted jute or fibre. Sickles are an essential tool in every household, and are used not only to cut grass for the livestock - a dangerous occupation on the steep Himalayan mountain hillsides, but also in the kitchen to cut and prepare vegetables.
