Description: This tall and impressive piece represents a male
ancestral figure. It served as a shrine figure belonging to the
Hogon, the spiritual leader of the Dogon. The Dogon worship
their ancestors, both historical and mythical, and this figure
relates to a real or fictional ancestor. The sculpture of the
Dogon constitutes one of the richest artistic traditions of
West Africa.
We acquired this piece in Mali in 1996. Originally collected in the Sanga village in the 1960's
by Mamadou Diao. Purchased from Mamadi Diane ( Mousa Diane's father) who acquired the piece from his friend Mamadou Sylla, better known as Diao who passed away in 1978.
