The neck rings formerly worn by BaNtwane and Ndebele women varied considerably in size and shape and in a variety of colors. Made by the winding of a continuous string of beads around a circular straw or grass base.
Characteristic element of young unmarried women’s ceremonial attire. After marriage, copper or brass neck rings replace them, indicating a woman’s new status.
Beaded neck rings are seldom heavy. Although bulky, they are usually strung over cloth or grass. Rings like these are worn in combination with other beadwork items.
Diameter varies between 10 1/2" - 13 1/2".
