The Dogon people have an annual ceremony
called the Dama, during which some 80 different style of masks are
danced to commemorate those who have passed away during the past
year. The Satimbe mask is surmounted by a female figure which represents
Yasigine, the sister of the masks, the only woman admitted to the Awa
male society. The Dogon inhabit the Bandiagara Cliffs of Mali, a veritable
fortress, and have remained there to this day, as one of Africa's most
spiritual people.
