Sadza Batik - Zimbabwe

$125.00
Sadza is the Shona name for the traditional stiff maize porridge, which is the staple food in Zimbabwe. The fabric paintings are made using sadza instead of the usual wax resist. The sadza porridge is first cooked and then used to draw the outline. After the outline has dried, the picture is colored with fabric paints and again allowed to dry. The material is then soaked & washed to remove the porridge. The paint does not come into contact with the cloth in those areas where the material was protected by the porridge. ( A batik process).

A wonderful array of safari animals are depicted in this original batik. This could have multi purposes, like a wall hanging, or a table covering, or even made into a bedspread!
