The mask is not actually worn,
but is rather attached to a pole,
covered in brightly colored fabrics,
and is animated as a marionette.
"It" sings songs, teaches children
folklore, morals, traditions and
history.
A large variety of sculpted
characters are used in the puppet
theatre of Mali. They perform in
public festivals shared by a young
adults from the Bambara, Marka &
Bozo peoples.
This was collected in the early '90's by ourselves in Mali, and shows much age. It is probably part of a marionette.
