Mblo masks perform at gbagba entertainment
dances on important occasions. These portrait masks appear one by
one, each escorted by its human ‘double’ and greeted as an honored guest. The face masks are portraits representing individuals who
embody an ideal in their culture. Although portrait masks depict a
person in his or her prime, their performance suggests a dignified
elder. It celebrates beauty and age, hence its refined features. Most
mblo portrait masks can be recognized as depictions of known
people.Likely post WWII.
