This beautiful mask is admittedly a bit of a mystery one as it is so unusual. At first we thought it may be from the Jonga people in the D.R. Congo because of the coloring, and because Christopher McConnell bought it as such, but in researching this more, we believe to be more from the Goma area.
This mask is not worn, but is shown to
the males undergoing initiation rites in to either their
Karunga, or Kilanda societies. The mask is rather flat,
enhanced with red and white pigments, and has no ears.
They are culturally and artistically influenced by their
neighbors, the Bembe.
