Very few statues of couples have remained together in collections, as is the case here. The blackened patina has
been worn off with age and usage. The pair is masterfully rendered in
similar form. Senufo large-scale sculptural pairs commemorate the
primordial couple and celebrate their enduring beauty and
idealized complementariness. This male and female pair, representing
an ideal Senufo man and woman, commemorate the original ancestors
of the Senufo account of creation. Together, they reflect the complementary social roles of men and women in Senufo culture.
