The 50,000 Baga inhabit the swampy coastal lagoon region of Guinea. The environment is difficult for human survival, but is a fertile one.
The Nimba figure represents the goddess of maternity worshipped by the Simo society. Although it encapsulates the idea of a fertile woman, it is invoked both for the fertility of the fields & for that of women. Used in rituals
held before the rice crop is harvested.
