Ndunga masks are named after the secret
society they belonged to and to the name given
to the masked figure who wore a hefty costume
of dried banana leaves.
The Ngunda society
played a ritual and political role acting as a
king of secret police, responsible for keeping
civil order.
Its members had to maintain
political stability by enforcing law and tracking
down criminals.
