Vintage made in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa from beads and fiber.
Not having a written language, the Zulu developed a form of symbolism in their beadwork. The colors as
well as color combinations and patterns, particularly in adornments
which were made as love tokens, all have meaning such as this
Umgexo given by a girl to her fiance“.
Created prior to the 1950's, these beadwork pieces were made by the Zulu in South Africa, and are part of the African Heritage Trust Collection. Love Letter necklaces expressed sentiments through use of code colors and shapes.
