Featuring multiple Love letters - ‘Umgexo’ - Not having a written language, the Zulu developed a form of symbolism in their beadwork. Beads that speak. The colors as well as color combinations and patterns, particularly in adornments which were made as love tokens, all have meaning such as this Umgexo given by a girl to her fiance´.
WHITE: "My heart is clear & pure and waiting for you."
RED: "My heart is bleeding for you."
GREEN: "I am thin as a blade of grass pining for you"
YELLOW: "I am jealous but I still love you."
PINK: "You have wasted your money & have no cows to pay for my lobola & I don't love you.
A great assemblage of old Zulu beadwork that would have been worn as adornments to show clan affiliation, status etc. Beautifully mounted too!
