Lega masks form part of the Bwami initiation rites. They serve as a mark of rank, identifying the owners as members of specific Bwami levels. Lega masks are rarely worn over the face and made of wood and kaolin. They are usually attached to different parts of the body, or hung on fences surrounding the dance area. Carved from Alstonia Congensis wood.
