Metal shields are rare in Africa but the Kirdi and Nupe
are one of the few exceptions to this rule. They
evolved from hide shields with the same shape
and bumpy decorative protrusions, which were
thought to distract an opponent giving the
warrior time to strike a blow with a weapon.
The shield itself is 29 1/2" x 18", and it is beautifully mounted on a rust colored suede frame. The shield is easily removed from the mounting if need be.
The frame measures 34" x 24".
