This isicholo is based on a married
woman's hairstyle from past
generations. Most Zulu women wear
these hats only for special or
ceremonial occasions. A basketry
foundation is overlaid with string or
grass fiber dyed with a mixture of
red ochre and fat. The hats are
symbolic of a woman's maturity &
her marital status.
This particular isicholo is very old and is made from actual human hair. It measures 19.5" in diameter and makes a striking wall piece.
