Male Figure - Bamana (Bambara) People, Segou Region Mali

This fine statue was in the collection of the famous collector Bess J. Cohen of New York and was auctioned by Sotheby's in 1980. We acquired it from the collection of Valerie Barnard Webster, and have the repot for it when she purchased it in 1999 for $7200.

The description in the Sotheby's auction catalog read "Male figure of slender angular form, standing with spatulate hands, flanking his hips, the long beard and face with metal insert eyes is surmounted by a conical headrest with crosshatched decoration; brownish – black patina."

Height: 15 ½" (or 17 ½" on its base) x Width: 4 ¾" x Depth: 2 ¾".

The base is 4" square and 1 ¾" in height.

It is missing a toe, and there is a native repair to a right hand finger, all due to age and wear and tear.
