The arts of Dogon people of Mali are
among the best known of all African
groups. The sculptures were stored in
the house of the Hogon, the spiritual
leader and taken out to commemorate
and honor their ancestors.
The Dogon live in the remote Bandiagara cliffs.
They have a very complex cosmology and are
known for their incredible masks and sculptures.
Sculptures are important in their everyday life.
Dogon art is as stubbornly individualistic as the tribe itself. They believe that every living creature, man or beast, has its own soul or nyama, which is immortal.
