Mabinda Marionette - Sukuma People, Tanzania

This authentic ceremonial puppet with separate articulated arms, conical head, simplified facial features with hollowed eyes, is from the Sukuma people. The Nyamwezi, who live in a nearby area, have similar figures, usually with inset beaded eyes.

Puppets were used in competitive theatrical dances trying to attract a larger audience usually for entertainment, while also for displaying morals, legends and heritage. Also used during funeral rites. A nephew of the deceased will manipulate the statue to praise the person's life.
