This beautiful, old painted shield from the Maasai (Masai, Masaai) people of Kenya and Tanzania is made of hide and wood. As a symbol of bravery, the color red is prominent. The painted designs indicate the clan and status of the bearer. This was collected by the journalist Harold Gris in Australia in 1959. It was apparently brought out of Africa in the late 1800's- early 1900's.
