This is a very large coffee table book and the photography and narrative is wonderful. (The Maasai believe that all the cattle in the world belong to the them). They have a warrior group which is the protector of the villages and young girls have a strict pecking order of boyfriends, depending on who is in the area (the warriors travel a lot!).
This book about the Maasai is written by a Maasai and documents their living story. It recounts the ancient legends, reveals songs and prayers, and vividly describes the stages of life for a Maasai: childhood, initiation, warrior rank, and finally elderhood. Each chapter is illustrated with line drawings and color photos.
The author recounts ancient Maasai legends and songs, and powerfully describes the vivid ceremonies that mark the passages in Maasai life....Everyday tribal life and the ceremonial high points are photographed with a clarity and eye for drama that make Maasai a breathtaking experience.
