Ibeji is the protective Orisha of twins. The name is derived from "Ibi" first born & "Eji" two. The Yoruba consider twins
to be good luck. They believe they share the same soul. If one
of the twins dies, the statues are made to become the abode of the
departed. Through the intermediary of of the Ibeji statue, the Yoruba
mother of a deceased twin could maintain a bond with her child.
