Helmet Mask - Holo People, D.R.Congo

This Holo mask was collected by a prominent collector, Peter Loebarth approximately 50 years ago in the D.R. Congo. He was an authority on the artwork from the Holo people.
Acquired from Loebarth by Robert Berg (Professor of Art, San Diego State University) in the late 70’s or early 80’s. Subsequently sold to Don C .Schneider, and then Valerie Barnard Webster.

Circumcision mask of tapering, oval form, long, high-bridged nose, dome shaped, coiffure, and large protuberant lids. The coiffure and chin are stained dark, the face white with blue design.

Holo helmet masks are quite rare, in fact this is the only one we have had in our 30+ years!
Although stylistically similar to the Suku and Zombo masks of this form, the Holo have a closer cultural affinity with the Luba.

The mask measures 28" in height including the thick collar of raffia and stand.
The actual wooden part of the mask is 14 ½" in height x 8" in width and depth.
