Title: Ge Gon Mask
Material: Wood
People: Dan
Country: Liberia
Description: This mask has oval or slit eyes, often
framed in metal (tin), and a large beak or snout with
a black beard. As the dancer swoops and dances, the
masker carries in its hands horsetail fly whisks that are
waved gently to imitate a large and graceful bird. This
mask represents a hornbill bird and the dancer would
have sung songs and proverbs to instruct the people in
the importance of this mythical bird.
