Gesture ia one of the most
enigmatic features of Dogon
sculpture, which depicts figures
with raised arms, arms crossed
over torso, hands covering eyes,
and a variety of other postures.
Figures with raised arms are often
associated with the prayer for rain,
although they have also been
related to rights of the harvest. The
presence of both beard & breasts
make this figure a hermaphrodite,
a motif whose meaning remains
obscure.
