Ceremonial Dance Paddle Staff- Ijaw (or Ijo) People - Nigeria CGM49

The Ijaw people, otherwise known as the Ijo people, are an ethnic group found in the Niger Delta in Nigeria, and are mostly fishermen. One of the world's most ancient peoples, they have existed as a distinct language and ethnic group for over 5000 years.
Traditionally, the Ijaws hold celebrations to honour the spirits or ancestors, while water spirits, known as Owuamapu, also figure prominently in their beliefs.

We have the receipt that Christopher McConnell purchased this piece from the L. Kahan Gallery in NYC on 8/1/1990 as an "Ijaw Staff with figure (Oar)".

Height: 40" x Width: 3 ⅝" x Depth: 3 ¼".
