George Mapfumo was born in 1953. He is married and has three children. He attended Domboshawe School
and Makumbi Mission until form two when he left school. George
began carving in 1976 after being encouraged by James Tandi. He
mainly works from hard brown Serpentine and more recently from
the beautiful Nyanga Serpentine, like this piece. Mapfumo’s works always contain
an elegant polished finish, which typifies the commitment and pride
that are to be seen in all his sculptures. His original and individualistic style centers on social situations, but he is also well known for
his beautiful bird sculptures.
Mapfumo has participated in international group exhibitions and some of his works are in the private
collection of world-renowned celebrities.
