In Dogon cosmology, Amma is the creator
of the universe. Nommo, represented in this
staff, was the first being created by Amma.
Iron staffs with the likeness of Nommo were
placed on personal shrines when asking for
rain. The bells serve to summon the ancestors
to heed to their request.
