Coast. The Deangle dancer is gentle &
graceful representing the idealized Dan
form of beauty. Deangle's function is to
teach, entertain, and nurture; in other
words it supports peaceful activities in
the village. The horizontal band of white
across its eyes represents the white
kaolin women paint on their faces for
special occasions. The Deangle
entertains & teaches by singing accounts
of history & by dancing and teaching
correct behavior. This Deangle mask is
sometimes called Sohngle, named for its
tall conical hat that looks like a basketry
fish trap, "sohn".
