In lost wax casting a model of the intended object is first carved out of wax then a clay mold is formed around the wax design. The clay and the wax inside is then heated enough so that the wax melts out or 'lost', hence the methods’s name - “lost wax casting”. To make the final product, hot metal is poured in, cooled and the clay broken away to reveal the bronze design. With this process, each casting is unique.

The Bobo people inhabit the southwest region of Burkina Faso. Many traditional Bobos are animist, and animals are believed to embody the bush spirits of the forest. Each family or clan typically has a totemic animal, and their duty is to protect the animal.

The one with baby in the mouth measures 8" in height x 15 1/2" in length, and the other is 6" in height x 13 1/2" in length.
