People: Tuareg
Country: Niger and Sahel region
The nomadic Tuareg of the Western Sahara Desert carry many items of jewelry for protection & guidance. The crosses are named after oasis towns. The most well known of these are the Tuareg crosses made from silver & sometimes tin. They are created using the lost wax casting method. These crosses are passed from father to son, when the son reaches puberty. The father would say, "My son, I give you the 4 corners of the world." This is an old, and well weathered/worn one.
