This sculpture is recognizable as the human form, even though it is severely eroded, showing its ancient age. The Tellem were the people who pre-dated the Dogon peoples in the Bandiagara escarpment (cliff-dwelling) region of Mali between the 11th and 15th centuries. This piece was found in a cave in the cliffs, which preserved it for centuries against destruction. In its early sculptural form it would have been used as a spiritual figure.
