This figure has a dual function.
Under the name Nkumba, it
depicts women in the high levels
of the initiation society known as
Bwami. Under the name mulima,
it depicts a bat. In this role, it is
hung by a string upside down and
is accompanied with the saying
"bat hangs with the head downward because of the bad word
spoken by sun"
