Material: Wood,natural fiber
Description: The Songye, formerly cannibals and warriors,
now live in an area north of the Katanga Luba, and north-
west of the Kasai Luba.
Although slightly
unclear, this particular piece, would have had long strands of fiber protruding
from its base to be used as a fly-whisk.
The wood handle carved in the form
of a standing male figure serves to
represent the ancestral spirit as well
as whisk away flies. In addition, this
prestige object would have indicated
status.
Included is a custom-built metal stand.
