Description: The Urhobo live in the western part of the Niger Delta. These large figures were kept in sanctuaries, and sacrifices were regularly offered, as they represented the spirits of nature, the "Edjo". The sculptures express purity, their half seated half standing position alludes to them constraining energy. They have attributes of authority as depicted with their top hats. In celebrations to the "Edjo", the sculptures are honored.
