Kenya's soapstone is found in the
highlands of the Kisii district Western Kenya.
The artisans produce each piece of art without
the assistance of any mechanical device.
Excavation of the raw quarry stone, carving,
polishing, painting and etching the piece are all
done manually. Each work of art is individual
and a reflection of the artists' creativity and
ingenuity. The stone varies in color, so whilst being primarily white, also has pink, tan and purple hues.
