WHITE: "My heart is clear & pure and waiting for you."
RED: "My heart is bleeding for you."
GREEN: "I am thin as a blade of grass pining for you"
YELLOW: "I am jealous but I still love you."
PINK: "You have wasted your money & have no cows to pay for
my lobola & I don't love you.
Because the colors of the beads carry such specific
meaning & because the Zulus, like most African
peoples, had no written language, they were used
to carry messages. The short fringed beaded skirts
worn by unmarried women were designed to catch
the eye with their every move.
