Bauxite is a type of aluminium ore. All African bauxite beads are hand made and bow drilled, making them very labor intensive.
Bauxite is also sometimes called "African pipestone", although it is called Abu in Ghana.
These small tubular or disc shaped beads have a rich, earthy, muted brick red color (due to the iron content in the stone) and are great for spacer beads for statement jewelry pieces. Very natural and organic!
Each bead is hand cut, carved and polished, and then drilled.
Strands photographed are the ones you get, measuring 16" to 24" on raffia.
