From the Kran, a sub-group of the Dan in Liberia and Ivory Coast, these figures are usually commissioned portraits that
represent the first or preferred wife of a chief.
They are not representations of ancestors. It is a
prestige object the owner would present to the
villagers with great pomp then store it away, to
be brought out only for important guests.
