This finely woven wicker shield is worn with a good patina from age and use. The original wooden handle is intact, including the wicker stitching, though it shows signs of use.
Azande warriors were armed with throwing knifes, spears, swords and had to protect themselves with wicker shields like these.
Their shields can be divided into three types, and this type, the ‘Gbilija’ was worn by the highest ranks and dignitaries.
The decoration of the woven rattan is typical for the Azande and shows the importance of the high ranked warrior who owned it. It also identified the shield bearer.
